Before a locum’s first session, confirm their registration, agree indemnity and payment, send a clear handover, and give them system access and an on-site contact. Doing this in advance means the session starts on time and the locum can focus on patients.
What should you confirm before the session?
- ☐ Registration and practising status are current, checked on the relevant public register
- ☐ Indemnity arrangements are agreed, including whether the clinic’s cover applies
- ☐ Date, start and finish times, and breaks are confirmed in writing
- ☐ Rate, payment date and cancellation terms are agreed
- ☐ The locum has the clinic address, directions and a named on-site contact
- ☐ System login is set up and tested
What should you send in the handover?
- ☐ How to use the clinic system, and who to call if it fails
- ☐ Where the drug room, consumables and forms are
- ☐ The emergency process and referral routes
- ☐ Usual patient mix and expected load
- ☐ How prescriptions, MCs and notes are handled at your clinic
What should happen on the day?
- ☐ A team member greets the locum and shows them around
- ☐ A short verbal handover before the first patient
- ☐ The locum knows who to ask when something is unclear
- ☐ Access to patient records is limited to what the locum needs
What should you do afterwards?
- ☐ Confirm the hours worked so payment is accurate
- ☐ Ask for the locum’s feedback and share yours
- ☐ Note what worked so the next handover is quicker
